Campeche Mexico

Campeche er en af de 32 føderale enheder i den Mexicanske Republik. Den er beliggende i det sydøstlige Mexico og er en af de tre enheder, der udgør Yucatan-halvøen, hvor den besætter den sydvestlige del af halvøen. Den dækker et område på 57,507 km2, hvilket svarer til 2,9% af det nationale territorium. Dens hovedstad er byen San Francisco de Campeche. Campeche er et ord af maya oprindelse, der stammer fra rødderne "can" (slange) og "pech" (flåt), hvilket betyder "stedet for slanger og flåter". Navnet skyldes, at der i denne maya-landsby var en statue af en slange med en flåt på hovedet, og ved hvis fødder der blev ofret mennesker. Da de spanske erobrere ankom til Can Pech, gav de det udtalen og kaldte det Campeche.
